Spottydog Candles is a small candle making business operating from the family home, but what are our goals and ethics. Well there are several.
The wax that we use is Soya Wax which comes from the soya bean harvest, so it is a crop that is planted and the Soya Wax is just one of the products made from the Soya bean plant, it also burns cleaner than petroleum based wax. Now we all have to recycle our waste which brings us to packing and plastic. This area has been the hardest to sort out as plastic is everywhere and on everything, but we think we have it sorted as best we can. Yes there is a plastic ring on the jar lids and it does save you getting broken jars so a compromise was made on the grounds of common sense. All the packaging is card which can be recycled and the wick retainer is metal so that can be recycled as well.
Our boxes are black and white no fancy printed ink hungry designs just a label of Danny our Spottydog Candle logo and contents description. By keeping to the monochrome image of black and white it also keeps the cost down, which is great as less cost makes the product affordable to all. As Spottydog Candles grow we hope to be able to contribute to tree planting programs to replace trees we have used in our packing, though some time away it is important to replace what has been taken.
Now the Soy Wax is a sustainable crop and the wax is lovely to use, it burns slow and the scent is gently thrown. Our candles are scented (unscented available by prior arrangement) but not heavily. It is our view that the scent should not overpower the room but be in the air in moderation to compliment the room. Is our product organic, the answer is no but we have made it as friendly to the customer and the environment as we can at the moment.
So we have achieved some goals with hardly any use of plastic in the product, jar lid ring is a compromise. Spottydog Candles uses UK suppliers to help limit our miles but our aim is to grow in a sustainable manner both business and environment.
So as our small hand poured batches of candles make there way onto the worlds stage we know that though Spottydog Candles are a small enterprise we aim to give a quality affordable product to the paying customer. Yes our batches are small and we know two batches of the same colour are never the same shade, but they are made with care and love and we hope this reflects in our product as you burn one Spottydog Candle one flame at a time.
